Reverse Smile

Presenting appearance & background

Heavily stained teeth due to having taken an antibiotic called tetracycline when she was young. Contour of upper teeth did not follow the lower lip, and there is the appearance of a 'reverse smile'.

Planning Phase

After a full arch wax up done, prior to to starting, we conducted a gender proportion tooth size analysis to get the correct proportions of height to width, as well as acheiving new lenghts to the teeth to make for a more slender elegant appearance and to get the correct Curve of Spee (smile line, see next picture).

Also her existing two front crowns looked bland and fake (due to the use of an old type of crown material – metal ceramic, which is non-translucent i.e. light cannot pass through it, hence the bland dead looking appearance).

Correcting a 'reverse smile'

The form of the upper teeth should be such as to match the upward contour of the lower lip (see photo). This patient previously had a reverse smile, which we made perfect after correct gender tooth proportion analysis and well made temporary crowns to assess aesthetic improvements.
